Autonomous driving firm WeRide has begun trial operations of its fully driverless Robotaxi fleet in Abu Dhabi, making it the first initiative of its kind in the Middle East.
The pilot, which runs on public roads, represents a major step forward in the emirate’s smart mobility ambitions. The service is set to expand to Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands, building on WeRide’s existing presence on Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and routes to Zayed International Airport.
WeRide has signalled its long-term commitment to the UAE, having received the country’s first national licence for autonomous vehicle testing and deployment in July 2023. Subject to regulatory approval, WeRide plans to launch commercial driverless services and new routes later this year.
