UAE’s G42 backs $1bn Italian AI supercomputer

UAE-based tech firm G42 has signed a partnership with Italian AI startup iGenius to develop a large-scale AI supercomputer in southern Italy, as part of a wider bilateral investment agreement.

The Colosseum project will receive $1bn in funding over five years and will use Nvidia technology. G42 is expected to lead financing for the initial phase, with the aim of establishing what is described as Europe’s largest AI computing deployment.

The collaboration marks a deepening of tech ties between the two nations. G42 is backed by Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, the UAE ruling family, and US private equity firm Silver Lake.
