The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority has certified what regulators describe as the world's first purpose-built commercial vertiport for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, marking a landmark step in Dubai's planned air taxi network.
The facility, designated VDX, cleared a comprehensive regulatory assessment spanning infrastructure, operational procedures, safety management systems and emergency preparedness. Spanning roughly 3,100 square metres across four storeys, it features two dedicated landing pads, rapid electric charging infrastructure and passenger processing facilities capable of handling up to 170,000 passengers annually.
The certification was secured by Skyports Infrastructure, which is developing three additional vertiports alongside Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. Commercial eVTOL services have not yet commenced and no launch date has been confirmed. GCAA Director General Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi described the milestone as a defining moment for aviation, reflecting the UAE's capacity to regulate emerging aerospace technologies without compromising safety standards.
