Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and AI-powered space technology firm Space42 have joined forces to co-develop the UAE's first space-to-ground quantum communication network.
The agreement will integrate satellite and ground-based systems using sovereign Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology, a cryptographic method that exploits quantum mechanics to render encryption keys unreadable the moment an eavesdropper intercepts them.
Under the partnership, TII and Space42 will develop, test, and deploy a space-based QKD payload, with a framework covering R&D, satellite integration, payload design, and in-orbit demonstration. The initiative builds on TII's existing quantum research capabilities and Space42's non-terrestrial network infrastructure, and includes a national talent development component.
