QIA launches Doha Investment division to supercharge domestic economy

Qatar's sovereign wealth fund has unveiled a dedicated domestic investment arm, marking a significant strategic pivot for an institution historically focused on deploying capital abroad.

Announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at a special Qatar Economic Forum in New York, the new division – Doha Investment – will initially oversee 45 state-owned enterprises representing roughly one-third of QIA's total asset base. Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani, Qatar's commerce and industry minister, will serve as managing director and vice-chairman of the new entity.

The QIA, estimated to hold USD 580 billion in assets under management, was founded in 2005 with a mandate centred on offshore capital deployment but has steadily built a domestic portfolio that includes Qatar Airways, QNB, Ooredoo, Qatari Diar and Katara Hospitality. The division's mandate spans national champion development, privatisation support, private-sector participation and economic diversification.
